There is no straight forward way to tell if someone has blocked your number.

You tried reaching a friend through phone call or text messages but no response was gotten from the person. Several times of trial but your call still enter voicemail on beeping once. You try reaching the person through text messages, but no response was received also. At this time, all you wonder is “Did they block me”.

When someone blocks your number, there are a few ways to tell — including unusual messages and how quickly your call transfers to voicemail. Let’s look at some educated guess that indicates your number is blocked and what you can do about it.

Determining if you’ve been blocked isn’t necessarily straightforward. Remember the best way to find out is to ask the person directly. If that’s not something you can or want to do, we have some tips to help you determine if you are blocked.

Let’s check it out…!

#1: Unusual Messages When You Call

The first indication something’s up is you’re calling a particular number but you get weird messages that you have not heard off.

There are many reasons this might be happening. But a blocked number is one possibility that seems they have blocked you through their wireless carrier. The messages vary by carrier but tend to be similar to the following:

  • “The person you are calling is unavailable.”
  • “The person you are calling is not accepting calls right now.”
  • “The number you are calling is temporarily out of service.”

When you call for a countless number of times and days and the same message still repeats itself, with no doubt you have been blocked. We also have exceptions for this type of messages, check below.

Exceptions: If the person frequently travels overseas, likely, you are not blocked. When network infrastructure has been damaged by natural disasters or any form of damage, you will likely receive one of those messages which means you are not blocked also. When there is a major event resulting in an unusually high number of people making calls at the same time, you make likely get a message similar to those above.

#2: See how fast you get to voicemail

If you call a person who has blocked your number, you won’t get any kind of notification about it. However, the ringtone/voicemail pattern won’t behave normally.

When you call a particular number and hear only one ring or no ring at all before your call goes to voicemail, this shows a strong indication that you are blocked. If you call on several occasions on different days and still get the same result back each time, it shows your number is blocked for real.

But if you hear three and a dozen rings before sending you to voicemail, then you are probably not blocked yet, however, the person is declining your calls or ignoring them. We still have exceptions, check below.

Exceptions: If the person you’re calling has the Do Not Disturb feature turned on, your call – and everyone else’s – will be quickly sent to voicemail. You will also get this result when their phone battery is dead or their phone is turned off. Wait a day or two before calling again to see if you get the same result.

#3: Try sending a text message if you suspect a particular number has blocked you.

Text messages can also provide some info on whether or not a person has blocked you, although it’s a more reliable method for iOS than it is for Android.

On iOS, after you send a text, you’ll usually get one of two notifications right underneath your message: “Delivered” or “Read.” The former means that your text message went through, but the recipient hasn’t read it yet. The latter is self-explanatory, that the recipient has read it already.

However, if a person has blocked you, you won’t see either notification. Instead, there will just be a blank space beneath your text.

If you and/or your intended recipient have Android phones, though, the process is much less straightforward. Some Android phones have this functionality; some don’t. When you send a message on an Android phone that has message notification enabled, you will also get a delivery report showing that your message went through. When the recipient reads the message, underneath the message will be a mark ticked “good” indicating the message was read.

However, if a person has blocked you, you won’t see either notification. Instead, there will just be a blank space beneath your text.

Exceptions: If the person you’re calling has the Do Not Disturb mode turned on, you won’t get any kind of notification until he or she turns that option off.

#4: Try Calling from another phone if you suspect you are been blocked.

Sometimes, the simplest solution is the best one. If you think you’ve been blocked, try calling the person’s number from another phone. Call them from a friend’s phone or have a friend you trust call them for you. The point is, if you can’t reach a person on your phone, but can reach them on another phone, there’s a good chance you’ve been blocked.

And yet, it’s not the worst mystery in the world to be blocked. When you are blocked, it seems the person no longer need your contact and the best thing is to respect that person’s decision. Repeatedly contacting someone who has taken steps to cut contact, such as blocking your number, could result in accusations of harassment or stalking and serious legal consequences.
